Miguel Louro is the soul of Quinta do Mouro. He loves what he does, and that can be seen in the emotion with which he talks about his wines.
História
Quinta do Mouro
Quinta do Mouro is located at the gates of the city of Estremoz, and for centuries belonged to the Zagalos family, one of the wealthiest in the city. This original “quinta” in Alentejo, where vast estates dominate, has a palatial house from the 17th century. 18th century, enchanting gardens, arbors and 18th century tanks. In 1979, aged just 26, luck dictated Miguel Louro’s fate at a poker table, among friends, when the dilemma of buying a Porsche or Quinta do Mouro arose. The first hectares of vines would be planted in 1989, after a failed foray into cattle raising, and today it is one of the most iconic wine producers in the region.
With the aim of creating great classics in Alentejo, the first 6 ha of vines were planted in 1989. Through successive experiments and adaptations, Miguel Louro realized that the key to achieving his goal was a peculiar viticulture, not only with regard to the careful choice of grape varieties, but also the unusual management of the vines, mostly planted in schist soils, low productivity and no irrigation. In the current 33 ha of vineyards, the indigenous Aragonês, Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira, Arinto, Antão Vaz and Verdelho grape varieties predominate, as well as the international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Petit Syrah.
